Home Studio Headshots

I think we\’ve all heard the phrase \”the best camera you have is the one with you.\” Right now, my mantra is \”the best studio and lighting you have is the one you have with you.\” In my best Tim Gunn voice, \”photographers, make it work.\”

When I graduated college, I lost the big studio space provided by the University, and I had always dreamed of opening my own studio. So I loaded up on studio equipment and lights and umbrellas, but fun fact – studio space is expensive.

So when my husband and I started looking for our first home, I wanted to make sure we had at least one extra bedroom that I could hopefully utilize as a small home studio. After we purchased our home, that extra guest room quickly became our \”we don\’t know what to do with this box, so it\’s going in here\” room. 

Between moving and furnishing our house and planning a wedding, the cleaning of our \”box room\” kept being pushed lower and lower on our priorities list. I\’m happy to say that after almost 6 months, our box room is now our official home studio space!

Below is a collection of some of the portraits I\’ve taken in our home studio, all with a single light source. Sometimes it was an old ring light, other times it was natural light, and other times it was my trusty hot-shoe flash. Since I primarily shoot with natural light and outdoors, this was also a chance to experiment with some prisms, gel lighting, and some other found materials.
